SALEM: An elderly couple was hacked to death and their granddaughter brutally attacked by a two-member gang in Erudhukaranur village near Kolathur in Mettur taluk here on Wednesday early morning. The police are yet to establish the motive behind the crime.
The deceased were identified as P Gurusamy, 70, of Erudhukaranur village near Kolathur in Mettur taluk and his wife Thanga, 65.
Their granddaughter, Sangeetha, 21, was admitted to the Salem government super specialty hospital with severe injuries.
The couple is survived by son Kuppusamy, 45, and daughters Muthumani, 42 and Mathammal, 39.
According to the police, Muthumani brought her elderly parents to her house to take care of her daughter Sangeetha, after her son Sasikumar was admitted to a private hospital in the city with fever.
Gurusamy, Thanga and Sangeetha were asleep when two persons entered the house on Wednesday early morning and hacked the trio.
Both Gurusamy and Thanga succumbed to their injuries on the spot. Sangeetha rushed to her neighbour’s house with injuries and the neighbour alerted the Kolathur police.
The police took Sangeetha to the Salem government super specialty hospital. The bodies were sent to the same hospital for postmortem.
The police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
