NAMAKKAL: A 45-year-old overhead water tank is in a state of disrepair and is on the verge of collapse, posing a threat to local residents. They have urged the district administration to take action and demolish the tank before any accidents occur.More than 800 families reside in the Kamaraj Nagar area of Avathipalayam, near to Pallipalayam in the Namakkal district. Approximately 45 years ago, the district administration constructed an overhead water tank with a capacity of one lakh litres to fulfil the drinking water requirements of the local population."This water tank, built 45 years ago, is now in a deteriorating condition," stated K Vijayakumar, a resident. He noted that the cement mortar is peeling off the structure. Additionally, the pillars that support the tank are cracked, and the concrete bars are so weakened that they are rusted and broken, which is evident from the outside.Numerous power loom units and residential homes are located near this overhead tank, causing significant concern among the public. Likewise, school children in the area must pass by this overhead water tank in the mornings and evenings on their way to school, which instils fear in them.
Residents expressed their frustration that despite meeting with various officials and submitting complaints over the past six months, no action has been taken to address the issue.Consequently, the local community is anxious that the structure could collapse at any moment. Therefore, the residents are calling for the demolition of the overhead tank and the construction of a new one.
