SALEM: A CISF jawan working as a guard at the Salem Steel Plant shot himself with a rifle on the plant premises in Salem on Wednesday. M Sakthivel, 36, of Periyakulam in Theni district was talking with his fellow guards five minutes before the incident.

The deceased has been identified as M Sakthivel, of Periyakulam in Theni district. He was deployed to the plant on October 23, 2018.
Chief of CISF (Steel plant) Ravi Ranjan Singh said Sakthivel was on duty at gate number 5. "He came for afternoon duty and was given a 5.6mm Insas rifle," he added. Around 3.10pm, fellow CISF jawans heard a gunshot and rushed to the spot. They found Sakthivel lying in a pool of blood on the floor.
"Sakthivel was taken to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead," deputy commissioner (west) of Salem city police M Madasamy said. Five minutes before the accident, Sakthivel was talking with his fellow guards, Madasamy said.
The Steel plant police have registered a case. A preliminary investigation revealed that he was not under any work pressure. "We don't know whether he had any family issues or he accidentally triggered the rifle . It will be ascertained only after an inquiry," the DC added. Sakthivel is survived by his wife P Chitra, 30, a 5-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.
