: A six-member team from the

central government

’s

dam

rehabilitation and improvement project (DRIP) inspected

in Mettur on Thursday. The team, led by DRIP chairman B K Mittal, inspected the sluice gates, 16 number shutters and tunnel shutters of the dam. They also visited the dam canals in a motorized boat.

The team also held a meeting with Public Works Department officials, including superintending engineer Jaya Gopal, executive engineer Devarajan and assistant executive engineers Subramanian and Madhusudan.

After the meeting, G Padmanabhan, one of the team members, said the Tamil Nadu government would repair and reinforce 36 dams in the state in the second phase of DRIP at an estimated cost of Rs 610 crore.

“The state government has given its nod to constitute an additional dam safety review panel to take up the second phase of the World Bank-funded project for which work will commence in April, this year,” he said. The Tamil Nadu water resources and agriculture engineering department will implement the project. The objective of the project is to improve the safety and operational performance of the existing dams and strengthen the dam safety institutional set up of the respective state.
