Salem: Ahead of the Diwali festival, city police have installed 40

cameras in crowded areas like the Bazaar area to maintain law and order. Authorities have also set up a temporary bus stand at Jawahar Mill Ground to clear festival rush and avoid traffic congestion in the city.

Almost all commercial establishments in the city are jam-packed with customers ahead of the festival. City roads are witnessing traffic congestion and parking hassles. Police personnel have been deployed at busy areas to manage crowd. They are alerting people about pickpockets and thieves who might make use of the situation.

More policemen will be deployed at important places till the Diwali day, a senior police officer said.

Authorities have set up a temporary bus stand, which will function until October 22. “Buses heading to Namakkal, Karur, Madurai, Trichy, Erode and Coimbatore will be using the temporary bus stand,” general manager of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) M Gajendran said.

Town buses will be plying between the temporary bus stand to all parts of the city until October 22. The temporary facility has shops, toilets and drinking water facility.

Textile shops in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Erode districts are doing brisk business. Sales reached full peak since Sunday, shopkeepers said. Jewellery shops in the region are also attracting thousands of customers.
