SALEM: Three of a family, including a two-and-a-half year-old child, were killed and two others critically injured after the car they were travelling in turned turtle as the driver lost control over the vehicle on national highways road near Bargur in Krishnagiri district on Monday evening.
The deceased were identified as Muralidharan, 34, his wife Vincy, 32, and their child.
Muralidharan’s daughter Megana, 4, and his mother Lakshmi, 54, sustained severe injuries. The family hailed from Palakkad in Kerala.
According to police, the five were heading towards Chennai in a car. When they reached a bridge at Athimarathupallam near Bargur, the driver lost control over the vehicle, which rolled over twice and landed on the other side of the national highways road. When the incident took place, Muralidharan was at the wheel. The front portion of the car was completely mangled in the mishap.
Muralidharan and his two-and-a-half year-old child died on the spot. Vincy, her daughter and her mother-in-law were caught trapped inside the car with severe injuries. They sought help and local people rushed to the spot and pulled the trio out from the car and took them to Krishnagiri government hospital in an ambulance. Vincy died at the hospital without responding to the treatment.
When alerted, the Burgur police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies of Muralidharan and his child to the Krishnagiri government hospital. The bodies will be handed over to the relatives of the deceased after the postmortem.
Following the accident, traffic was affected on the stretch for half-an-hour.
The Burgur police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
