’s 213th death anniversary was observed in

Salem

and

Erode

districts on Friday.

Ministers K A Sengottaiyan, P Thangamani, K P Anbalagan, K C Karuppannan, C Srinivasan, ‘Udumalai’ K Radhakrishnan, ‘Kadambur’ Raju and M R Vijayabhaskar paid floral tributes at the freedom fighter’s statue in

Erode district

, where he was buried.

They later honoured his siblings at a function organised by the Erode district administration, besides distributing aids worth 2.60 crore to 687 beneficiaries.

Addressing the gathering, Sengottaiyan recalled the sacrifices made by Dheeran Chinnamalai during the freedom struggle. “It was to honour his braveness, the late J Jayalalithaa allotted funds to construct memorials at Odanilai in Erode and at Sankari in Salem, where he was hung in 1805. Steps are taken to install bronze statue of Dheeran Chinnamalai at Odanilai at the earliest.”

Erode collector S Prabhakar, superintendent of police M Sakthi Ganesan and district revenue officer Latha, among others, participated in the function, which also featured cultural programmes.

In Salem, ministers P Thangamani and K P Anbalagan paid floral tribute at the portrait of the freedom fighter at Sankari Fort. They also visited his memorial situated on Salem-Erode state highway. Salem collector Rohini R Bhajibhakare and other officials accompanied the ministers.
