Want unconditional help & love? Get a dog
Dogs have long been revered as man's best friend, and in India, they're going above and beyond to transform lives. From guiding the visually impaired to providing emotional support, trained dogs are making a significant impact on individuals facing physical, medical, and mental health challenges.
Organizations like the National Association for the Blind (NAB) are providing guide dogs to empower individuals with visual impairments. Similarly, hearing dogs are being trained to assist the deaf or persons with hearing difficulties, while service dogs are helping people with disabilities like autism or mobility issues.
In addition, service dogs are being trained to support individuals with mental health illnesses like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. These dogs provide emotional support, companionship, and even remind their owners to take medication.
NGOs like the Epilepsy Foundation are also providing seizure response dogs to support individuals with epilepsy. These dogs can detect seizures and provide comfort during and after the episode.
Some of the most popular breeds being used as assistance dogs in India include Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Poodles. These breeds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and friendly temperament, making them ideal for various assistance roles.
In a recent development, a city airport has relaunched an unique programme, featuring nine specially trained emotional support dogs. These dogs, including breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and Maltese, will be available to cuddle and play with travellers at Terminal 2's departure area every Friday to Sunday between 3 pm and 11 pm.
The programme aims to reduce travel anxiety and create a more welcoming environment at the airport. With the help of these furry friends, India is taking a ‘pawsitive' step towards making life easier for everyone.
