RANCHI: A day after chief minister Hemant Soren, his cabinet colleagues and UPA MLAs enjoyed boat rides on the newly renovated Latratu dam in Khunti, nearly a thousand tourists on Sunday flocked to the site, which has a large water body and scenic surroundings.
While Soren and his MLAs were spotted enjoying motorboat rides and the landscape on a cloudy Saturday afternoon, a few tourists who arrived on Sunday weren’t lucky as the rain played spoilsport.
Talking to TOI, many tourists appreciated the beautification work and the amenities provided there. Some said they went after seeing the site on TV and the CM entourage visiting the spot, a few others said they were regular visitors and praised the renovation done.
Ashok Baitha, a resident of Bero, said, “I have come here with 15 members of the self-help group from my area. We knew about this place but the attention it received on Saturday also influenced our plan .”
Asha Soren from Hatia said she, too, drove down with her family on Sunday to the place which was on TV all day on Saturday. “I have been to this area earlier but when we saw the CM, his ministers and MLAs enjoying boat rides, the site looked even more scenic. So I planned a day out with my kids and husband. We took motorboat rides and walked around the water body .”
Abhishek Kumar, a resident of Argora area, said, “I had come here in December last year while visiting a famous Sai Temple nearby. But the place looked good on the TV when the CM and his MLAs were around. So, I decided to visit again today.”
About the changes he witnessed on Sunday, Kumar said, “First and foremost is the guest house. They have also made proper arrangements for drinking water and toilets. The landscaping with a play area for kids is fantastic. The motor boat facility has also developed .”
Around 1,000 people visited the dam on Sunday which was very rare even on weekends few years ago.
Khunti DC Shashi Ranjan said, “This place was completely unexplored and not accessible. We have been working to turn it into a major tourist attraction for the last two years. As part of the development plan, roads to the site have been made. Eight kayak boats and five motorboats are currently functional.”
