Two women flee probation home
Ranchi: Two physically challenged inmates of Ranchi's probation home for women escaped late on Saturday night, triggering a daylong search by the district police on Sunday. Police said Punam Kumari, 27, and Priya Kumari, 22, who have speech and hearing impairment, dodged security cordons and slipped out of the facility in Namkum area between 2 am and 3 am. The home management got a whiff of the duo's absence in the morning. A primary investigation revealed the duo climbed the roof of the generator room and reached the 20 ft high periphery wall. A rope found hanging to the barbed wire suggested their way out, authorities claimed. However, no headway was made in locating the duo, sources said. The escape raised questions on the efficiency of the home's security apparatus and also pointed at foul-play. A two-member team from the state child welfare commission rushed to the probation home in the afternoon. Kujur took stock of the facility and spoke to other inmates before constituting a probe team.IG prisons Suman Gupta also ordered a probe and search for the absconding inmates. Suspecting foul play on part of the security personnel, Gupta threatened to act tough if anyone was found guilty . "All police stations have been provided with photographs and details of the two missing individuals. Search is on," Gupta said.
