Villagers had on Wednesday handed Shakil over to the police suspecting him to be a thief. A police officer said that the deceased was spotted by villagers on roof of the house of one Varun Singh in Bogadih village of Giridih on Wednesday evening. The locals beat him up before they handed him over to the police. “He was kept in a room last night. In the morning, he was found hanging from the fan with a towel,” said an official.

While Giridih SP Surender Kumar Jha, who visited the police station to initiate

probe

, couldn’t be contacted for comment, police sources said a

post-mortem

was conducted on the body by the medical board in presence of a magistrate. The autopsy was also recorded on camera on direction of Girdih DC Rajesh Pathak. Pathak said: “An inquiry has been ordered and reports are awaited.”
