GUMLA: Tribal-dominated Gumla which was carved out of Ranchi district on 18 May, 1983 is going to celebrate its 40th establishment day on Thursday.
The nondescript district shot to fame when players of the district won silver medal in Subroto Cup Football Tournament in 1989. In 1990, the district hosted its first national school games.
Since then, it won laurels as a sports township in undivided Bihar.

The district with Simdega as its part had churned out four Olympians - Michael Kindo, Sylvanus Dungdung, Manohar Topno and Ajit Lakra.
After it became a separate district, a variety of new construction projects were executed by then DC A N P Sinha from 1985 to 1987. "New government office buildings came up, giving it a new look," said retired professor N K Keshri.
The residents here got first government-run park named after Birsa Munda during the tenure of DC Sunil Kumar from 2004 to 2005.
In 1992, Maoist Communist Centre killed a man at Jamti village. Soon People War Group also set up its network in the forest region. From 2000 to 2017, CPI(Maoist) established its hold in the rural areas. During this period, the rebels had looted over 200 private guns from local zamindars. Now, the district is almost free of Maoists' presence.

During the stint of Rahul Sharma from 2009 to 2012, the district shot to limelight for its model village project.
In a first for Jharkhand, Gumla deputy commissioner Sushant Gaurav won the Prime Minister's Award For Excellence in Public Administration in the Aspirational District Programme (ADP) on the theme - Holistic Development in a Saturation Mode. The award was presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on April 21 observed as Civil Services Day.
