Quack among 2 dead after taking self-made medicine in Jharkhand

GUMLA: Two individuals, including a quack, lost their lives, and two others fell ill after consuming medicine prepared by the quack on Friday night.

A resident of Silafari village, Sujit Tirkey, approached Sudhir Tirkey of Madaikona village in Chainpur for medicines to relieve him of some ailment. The quack took Sujit to the house of one Basant Tirkey.

Basant’s wife, Sushma Tirkey, said, “I ground two herbs and boiled it in ghee. Then, Sudhir mixed it with honey and turned these into pills. He consumed one while assuring us that the medicine could be taken by anyone for strength. However, all began vomiting and complained of headache soon. Sudhir, Basant, Sujit, and adaily wager, Saddam, were taken to the community health centre, Chainpur, from where they were referred to the Sadar Hospital.”

Civil surgeon Dr Nawal Kumar said, “Sudhir and Basant died on the way while Sujit and Saddam were admitted to a local hospital.”

Jabalpur collector orders ban on quacks

The district collector of Jabalpur has ordered a ban on unregistered medical practitioners and quacks in the district. The directive states that several clinics are providing treatments without proper registration, which is illegal and punishable by imprisonment and fines. Block-level medical officers must report monthly on actions taken against these establishments.

During the Aarogya Vatika 2.0 campaign at Nandan Park in Gomtinagar, 100 medicinal plants were distributed. Attendees pledged to support plant care and environmental preservation. Speakers stressed the importance of medicinal plants, urging citizens to participate in plantation efforts and waste segregation to protect groundwater and combat air pollution.
