Situation improving, say experts as nitrogen flushing continues in Kenduadih

Dhanbad: The management of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) has intensified nitrogen flushing in Kenduadih to contain the toxic gas leak. Authorities are maintaining strict vigilance in the affected zone while experts work round the clock to stabilise the situation.

The Panigrahi Mining Research and Consultancy Private Limited (PMRC) team is actively carrying out the nitrogen injection process. B C Panigrahi, the managing director of PMRC, said, “The procedure was initiated only after completing the full borehole process. Initially, a six-inch borehole was drilled, followed by a three-inch borehole to facilitate gassing, after which nitrogen injection was started. Continuous visual monitoring is being done to assess the level of gas control achieved through the process.”

Panigrahi further said that the pace of control depends on underground conditions, which cannot be directly observed. “If no major complications arise underground, the situation is expected to normalise soon,” he added.

Nitrogen injection helps reduce oxygen levels and provides a cooling effect, aiding in controlling the internal reaction. Three borehole points are planned, with work on the second point set to begin shortly. PMRC chief scientist Nageshwar Saha said conditions have improved significantly. “However, nitrogen flushing will continue for 72 hours before the next course of action is decided,” he added.
