DUMKA: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) president and former chief minister Shibu Soren has sparked controversy by attending a Muslim religious programme in Jamtara. Soren, along with JMM MLA from Madhupur and state minister Hazi Hussain Ansari, attended the event at Jiyajori village on March 21 and also delivered a speech in presence of several community leaders.

Leaders from rival parties said Soren has violated the model code of conduct. Sunil Soren, BJP's candidate from Dumka, said: "Shibu Soren has violated the model code of conduct by delivering a speech in a religious event. Surprisingly, the Jamtara district administration did not take cognizance of the matter."
Political observers believe Soren's visit to 'Jalsa' is a bid to revive the party's secular credentials, which dipped after JMM joined hands with BJP to form a coalition government in the state. Minority electorates have traditionally supported JMM over the decades.
Analysts said that though JMM eventually withdrew from the Arjun Munda-led government, the party is still viewed with suspicion among the minority electorate and considering to vote for other parties.
