Severe Burns for Three Contract Workers at Bokaro Steel Plant Due to Crane Cable Failure

Bokaro: Three contract workers were severely burned when molten hot metal spilled on them from the Steel Melting Shop (SMS)-2 of the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a unit of the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), on Sunday evening.

The accident occurred after the cable of a mixer crane snapped, causing molten metal to fall from the ladle from a height of nearly 50 feet.

All three workers were immediately admitted to the Bokaro General Hospital (BGH), where their condition is said to be critical. Factory inspector Shivanand Laguri confirmed the incident and said the site will be inspected on Monday, and appropriate legal action will be taken.

Bokaro MLA Sweta Singh visited BGH and inquired about the health of workers. Talking about the accident, she said, “The rising number of accidents at BSL has raised questions about the plant’s safety protocols.”

The injured contract workers have been identified as Brijesh Mahtha, Praveen Kumar Laheri and Om Prakash. The spill created a fire-like condition at the site, causing panic among the workers. Sangram Singh, a trade union leader at BSL, said the accident resulted from a crane cable failure.

Stating that the three workers sustained grievous burn injuries, Singh accused the BSL management of negligence and said that “safety rules exist only on paper”. Manikant Dhan, the chief of communications at BSL, said the incident occurred around 3:45 pm during molten metal transfer.
