Rekindled love for diyas light up potters’ lives this Diwali
Meanwhile, in 9 Dundibagh and various other areas, potters are skilfully moulding clay into lamp designs, preserving an age-old tradition that carries deep cultural significance.
Rekha Verma, a resident of Sector 1, said, “I have decided to celebrate Diwali by lighting diyas. And I have said big ‘no’ to Chinese lights.” In her locality, other residents are also inclined towards purchasing diyas for Diwali than putting up LED lights.”
In recent years, the spread of Chinese-made decorative items had posed a significant challenge to the livelihood of local potters. This year, however, potters are appealing to the community to embrace the use of earthen lamps, not only as an act of cultural preservation but also to boost their own livelihoods. “Motivating videos on potters and value of diyas on Diwali circulating on social media has helped change the minds of people and celebrate Diwali with diyas,” said Ram Kumar Sharma, a resident of City Centre. Manoj Karmkar, a potter in Mahaal of Chandankyari block, said, “The process of crafting these earthen lamps involves keeping clay soaked in water throughout the day and sculpting it on a wheel in the morning. We are happy that our hard work is translating into rise in sale of earthen lamps this year.”
Potters recalled the sale of clay lamps during the previous Diwali was promising, resulting in increased profits. With the renewed focus on traditional lamps, they are optimistic about successful sales this year.
Celebrate Diwali with lights, not polluting crackers: City celebs
A recent report has revealed that Kolkata's air quality has worsened compared to last year, and concerns are growing that it will further deteriorate during Diwali. Health issues, especially respiratory problems, are on the rise due to pollution, particularly caused by firecrackers. Many individuals, including celebrities, are urging people to celebrate Diwali responsibly by avoiding crackers and opting for lights and diyas instead. The report also highlights the negative impact of pollution on public health, including respiratory infections and an increased risk of cancer. Suggestions for a sustainable Diwali include using eco-friendly decorations, biodegradable wrapping paper, and reducing plastic consumption.
Kolkata bazaars stock up on trendy diyas and lights
As Diwali approaches, people are looking for innovative ways to decorate their homes. Traditional diyas are still popular, but quirky LEDs and neon lights are also gaining popularity. Actress Alivia Sarkar prefers handmade diyas over artificial lights, while other customers are looking for minimalistic and earthen options. Water sensor diyas and remote controlled firecracker lights are new additions this year. It is important to store and handle fairy lights properly to avoid damage.
