RANCHI: When private and government hospitals in Ranchi are not adhering to the standard fire safety operating procedures, one private hospital stands out. The
Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital
is one of the five private hospitals in the state capital that regularly monitors its fire safety management mechanisms.
The hospital, which has received a compliance certificate of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Providers (NABH), sets an example for others to follow by adhering to the stringent clauses of the NABH.
The NABH regulations make it compulsory for every hospital to have active fire alarm systems. Smoke detectors will be installed in every part of a hospital building to detect fires that have been caught through electrical failure or for some other reason. A fire alarm panel will be installed in the hospital to locate the fire in less time.
The clauses mandate every hospital to have an underground water reservoir on standby round the year for firefighting.
It mandates installation of fire-hoses in every floor of a hospital which can draw water from the reservoir or an outside source. Every ward is mandated to have over-head sprinklers that will open up if the room temperatures rise beyond pre-set degrees.
Under NABH regulations, hospitals are required to form special fire safety teams. The teams are supposed to regularly check the fire management infrastructure and do a periodic check of electrical wires.
"We conduct mock fire-fighting and evacuation drills twice a year to keep our staff ready for a real-time situation," Dr BP Kashyap, co-founder of the hospital said.
The hospital also keeps an open space, called 'set-back' area for emergency evacuations. "The NABH regulations also mandate that the approach road to a hospital must be free of any obstruction. We have maintained that,"
