Ranchi’s Bengali Community Welcomes Poila Boishakh with Culture, Cuisine, and Camaraderie
Ranchi: The Bengali community of Ranchi ushered in Poila Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, with great enthusiasm and cultural pride on Tuesday. The day began with devotees flocking to temples to offer prayers for prosperity and well-being, followed by families preparing a wide array of traditional delicacies.In the evening, Plaza Chowk turned into a vibrant hub of celebration, hosting a cultural program showcasing Bengali music, dance, and cuisine. The event was organized to bring together the Bengali diaspora and celebrate the rich heritage of Bengal."Poila Boishakh is not just a festival; it is an emotion for us. It's a celebration of food and harvest. We mark the beginning of the year with traditional rituals, wear Bengali attire, and prepare our authentic dishes to honor our roots," said Kamal Kumar Bose, President of Deshpriyo Club and Library.Pampa Sen Biswas, a professor at SG Memorial College, emphasized the culinary essence of the day. "One cannot imagine Poila Boishakh without yellow Basanti Pulao paired with chicken, mutton, or fish curry. Kheer is a must-have, served with puri and aloo sabji. Dishes like shukto, begun bhaja, and cholar dal also grace the table in many homes," she sharedFor many Bengalis living away from their hometowns, the day carries a bittersweet flavor. Preeti Mandal, a resident of Bokaro now living in Ranchi, expressed, "I miss home a lot during Poila Boishakh, but I'm happy to be part of the fair at Union Club, where we have stalls serving traditional food and cultural performances. It brings our community together and creates a sense of belonging."The streets and venues were adorned with Bengali decorations, while people dressed in traditional attire, men in dhoti-kurta and women in padh sarees greeted each other with warm wishes of "Shubho Noboborsho".The celebrations reflected a beautiful blend of nostalgia, festivity, and unity, making Poila Boishakh in Ranchi a memorable affair for the Bengali community
