Ranchi Water Crisis Preparedness: RMC Assures Surplus Supply Amidst Heatwave and Below-Normal Rainfall Forecast
Ranchi: With deep bore wells drying due to heat and IMD’s prediction of below-normal rainfall across the country, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has said that it is fully prepared to tackle any potential water crisis.
Deputy municipal commissioner Ravindra Kumar assured residents that there is no need to worry. “We have surplus water to supply in case of a crisis,” he said.
He added that a survey of hand pumps across the city is currently underway. “Some hand pumps are defunct. We are marking them with different colours to maintain records — indicating which are non-functional, repairable and operational,” he said.
Out of Ranchi’s 53 wards, around 19 to 20 face water shortage during the summer months. “We ensure water supply to these affected wards,” Kumar said.
He said that with the onset of summer, water scarcity has already begun, and the RMC is currently deploying 50 water tankers across different parts of the city. “Each tanker carries around 4,000 litres of water, which is supplied free of cost,” he said.
Kumar also highlighted measures to prevent the situation from worsening. The civic body is encouraging reduced use of bore well water and promoting rainwater harvesting to ease the pressure on groundwater resources.
“To supply water to crisis-hit areas, we do not rely on groundwater. Our tankers are filled with treated water sourced from public health engineering department (PHED) sumps, which helps conserve groundwater,” he added.
The Met office in Ranchi has predicted heatwave-like conditions at some places across the state on Monday. According to the bulletin, heatwave is likely at isolated places over the northwestern part of the state, comprising Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar and Chatra districts. On the other hand, the bulleting predicted thunderstorms/lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places over the northeastern part of the state — Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur, Dumka, Deoghar and Jamtara districts.
For Tuesday, the Met office predicted heatwave at isolated places over southern and northwestern parts of the state comprising Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Chatra, Simdega, West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts. Like Monday, it also warned of thunderstorm/lightning at isolated places in Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur, Dumka, Deoghar and Jamtara districts.
During the past 24 hours till Sunday morning, dry weather prevailed over the state. The highest temperature of 43 degrees Celsius was recorded at Daltonganj, while the lowest temperature of 18.8C was recorded at Gumla, the bulletin said. Ranchi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8C.
Some districts in the northeastern part of the state such as Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur, Dumka, Deoghar and Jamtara may receive little rain at isolated places between Monday and Wednesday.
