Ranchi Public Water Taps Neglected: Health Concerns Rise Amidst Unhygienic Conditions

Ranchi: Public drinking water taps installed across the city are in a state of neglect, with many located amid unhygienic surroundings, raising serious concerns over public health and safety. Despite their condition, these taps remain a crucial source of water for hundreds of residents, including students, daily wage earners and working professionals.In several localities, the taps are found surrounded by garbage, stagnant water and open drains, making them vulnerable to contamination. Locals allege that these facilities have not been cleaned or maintained for years, raising concerns about the purity of the water. When TOI visited some of the drinking water taps in the city on Tuesday, they were found to be in a state of neglect in many localities which are visited by thousands of people every day. At Kutchery Chowk, where the Ranchi Collectorate office is situated, the taps are surrounded by dirt and filth. The same condition was noticed at the taps installed near the Morhabadi playground, where many people, especially the youths, gather to play every day.“The pathetic condition of the taps at the Kutchery Chowk is a matter of serious concern, as it is the centre point of the district machinery where hundreds of people from across the district visit to get their official works done,” said Jaypal Bhagat, a visitor to the Ranchi Collectorate.Roadside eateries and tea stall operators are among the regular users of these public taps, as they rely on them for cooking, washing utensils and preparing beverages. “I use water from the public taps, as the tap is situated near our stall. However, I have never seen anyone cleaning the water tank. I run a small shop and cannot afford to purchase water for regular use,” said Savitri Kumari, a roadside tea staller at Circular Road.“The taps are being installed across the city by various private entities such as NGOs and social organisations. They just installed the taps and never maintain them. The municipal corporation is not responsible for cleaning and maintaining the taps,” Ranchi Municipal Corporation’s city manager Ambuj Kumar Singh said.Many of the taps are also being installed with the help of former and present MPs and MLAs' funds.Another senior official of Ranchi district administration, on condition of anonymity, said that the maintenance of the drinking taps is the responsibility of the social organisations that installed those. While the district administration authorities denied taking responsibility for the maintenance of the taps, commoners on the road continue to face the ill effects.
