Ranchi residents grapple with piled-up garbage heaps

Ranchi: Ranchi is facing a severe waste management crisis with over 1,100 garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) reported in 53 wards across the city, sources in the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) said."I have to walk through heaps of garbage daily to reach my office. The stench and mosquitoes are unbearable," says Sriparna Banerjee of All Computer Center at KC Complex, Deputy Para Road. A resident of Chunna Bhatta, Subodh Vishwakarma, said, "Household waste is dumped near our residence daily. Even the RMC garbage collection staff overlook the area."A resident of JC Road, Ritik Das, said, "Earlier, dustbins were placed on every street. Now, locals resort to dumping waste on roads in the absence of regular door-to-door collection of waste. The accumulated garbage attracts stray animals, worsening the situation."The RMC attributes the crisis to poor civic sense and lack of awareness about proper waste disposal methods. Despite requesting people not to dump waste, the practice continues unabated. The civic body is developing new strategies to address the challenges. Additional administrator Sanjay Kumar said, "We're planning to enhance waste management infrastructure, including establishing designated disposal sites and improving collection services. Areas frequently used for dumping will be cleaned twice daily, including during night shifts."
