RAMGARH: The residents of remote villages under Gola and Dulmi blocks of Ramgarh district would have to travel 10 to 17 km to reach the nearest bank to exchange or deposit the Rs 2,000 denomination notes in their possession, if any. The financial institutions are yet to roll out any mobile banking facilities for remote areas.
Meanwhile, there was hardly any footfall of customers at the branches located in the urban pockets on Tuesday, when the exchance/deposit process began in banks.
A resident of Dulmi block said, "Most of the people living here have bank accounts in Ramgarh, Chitarpur, and the Central Coalfields Limited's (CCL) Rajrappa project area, located 10km to 17km away. Also, the inhabitants of villages living in areas bordering West Bengal, including chief minister Hemant Soren's native village Nemra under Gola block, are forced to travel to the Gola block headquarters due to the absence of banking amenities in their localities."
A zila parishad member from Gola block, Jaleshwar Mahto, said, "Most of the labourers and farmers save money at home itself. Hence, the availability of Rs 2,000 notes with them cannot be ruled out. While September 30 is the window given to deposit the notes, banks should launch mobile banking services to help the villagers overcome the hassles of travelling long distances to deposit their own money."
A villager of Dulmi block, Srikant Mahto, said, "This is the only block which lacks any private or public sector bank."
The LDM of Ramgarh, Sanjeev Kumar, admitted no mobile banking facility has been launched by any bank yet according to a RBI circular. But they would coordinate with banks to sort out problems, if any, he maintained.
"There was no huge footfall trying to exchange the Rs 2,000 notes in banks," he stated.
