Garhwa: An elderly woman from a particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG) was trampled to death by a herd of elephants while she was out to graze her goats on Sunday evening. The deceased Jeerwa Korwa was a resident of Sidey village under Chinia police station limits of the district. Her corpse was recovered on Monday morning from a nearby forest. A girl accompanying her however managed to escape.
Jeerwa is the second casualty of elephant attacks in the district within a fortnight. On Jan 9, a 50-year-old PVTG woman was killed by jumbos in a village under the same police station limits. Amit Kumar, the officer-in-charge of Chinia police station, said Jeerwa’s body was sent to Garhwa sadar hospital for postmortem examination. “A sum of Rs 50,000 was paid to her kin as immediate compensation,” forester Animesh Kumar said.
