Potholed roads of Sindri colony cry for repair

SINDRI: Roads are said to be the index of development. But the roads of Sindri are a far cry from development. Dotted with potholes and craters, this stretch is a nightmare for anyone travelling here.
Authorities concerned, however, continue to pass the buck. While the Sindri fertilizer factory management claims to have no funds for repairing colony roads covering a stretch of 80 km, the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) too seems to have turned a Nelson's eye towards this town living in penury.S S Choudhary, assistant administrator of the Sindri circle of DMC, is not aware of any plan to repair the Sindri roads.
Sindri fertilizer factory was shut down in 2002. The factory management had stopped repairing roads about a decade ago owing to heavy losses incurred by the factory. Its been over two decades now that the roads have not been repaired.
A vast majority of the colony roads have become non-motorable. For newcomers to the town, bad roads are synonymous with Sindri.
"While the fertilizer factory is not in a position to repair roads, the ACC cement factory management is also not taking steps to maintain them," said Deepak Kumar of Sindri Chamber of Commerce, adding that the heavy vehicles of the cement factory had damaged the road.
The chamber has written to the cement factory management several times, but to no avail, he added.The Dhanbad district administration should prohibit plying of heavy vehicles on colony roads and instruct the cement factory management to maintain the main roads of the town and those leading to the colony and factory, he demanded.
S S Choudharyof DMC said he had no knowledge of any plans for repairing Sindri roads. "Tenders have been floated, but I have no idea as to when the actual repair work would start," he added.
