Ranchi: A film based on the life of Ajay Singh, a 35-year-old Indian Revenue Service officer with visual and auditory disabilities, will hopefully provide a ray of hope to the

Jharkhand

film industry.

'Ajab Singh Ki Gazab Kahaani' is being directed by Ranchi-based film-maker Rishi Mishra and boasts of acting heavyweights like Om Puri, Govind Namdeo, Yashpal Sharma and a host of local actors.

Around 80% of the film has already been shot in Seraikela-Kharsawan district since it hit the floors in January. Also, around 70% of the film's cast and crew is from Jharkhand and includes prominent thespians like Ajay Malkani, Madhu Rai, Ashok Pagal, among other notable names.

"I have been working in Mumbai for the past 15 years and have been out of touch with things happening in the state. In April, I was told about Singh's story. He (Singh) is quite popular in Jamshedpur as he is known as a 'no-nonsense' officer despite being

visually impaired

," said Mishra.

Mishra met Singh in Jamshedpur with a proposal to make a film on his life. In fact, the director asked Singh to play himself in the film.

"It feels nice to know that a film maker is interested in making movies that inspire the youth. I readily agreed to help him write the script but I was genuinely surprised when he offered the lead role to me. I consulted my department and they approved," said Singh, a rookie as far as acting in films in concerned.

"I believe we should strive to make more movies like this one to inspire the youth. Ajay's perseverance helped him overcome his disabilities. He even cracked the UPSC exams to become an

IRS officer

," said Anand Jalan, art committee chairman of the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce, who felicitated the cast and crew in Ranchi on Wednesday.

Singh, who is currently posted as deputy commissioner of income tax (circle 1) in Jamshedpur, hails from Dumri village in Chhapra district of Bihar.
