Chatra: The NTPC’s North Karanpura thermal power project in Tandwa has generated 10,195.89 million units (MU) of electricity so far in the ongoing financial year, its project head A K Tripathi said on Friday. The plant earned a profit of Rs 686 crore so far, he further said.
“Uninterrupted power generation is underway from all three units of the plant. Unit I began commercial operation on Mar 1, 2023, Unit II on Mar 20, 2024, and Unit III on Jun 15, 2025,” he added.
Tripathi said that against the approved project cost of Rs 21,495 crore, an expenditure of Rs 17,593 crore was incurred to date. “Electricity generated from the project is being transmitted to various states through the North Karanpura–Chandwa and North Karanpura–Gaya transmission lines. As per the allocation, Bihar receives the highest share of power at 890.46 MW, followed by Jharkhand (532.22 MW), Odisha (432.23 MW), West Bengal (124.14 MW), and Sikkim (0.73 MW)," he said.
Currently, coal is being supplied to the plant through road transport. However, a 7.5 km-long pipe conveyor from NTPC’s Magadh project is under construction and is in final stages. “Once completed, it will be NTPC’s longest coal pipe conveyor in the country,” Tripathi said. To ensure water availability, three lagoons with a combined capacity sufficient for nearly 10 months have been developed to store rainwater during the monsoon season. Highlighting NTPC’s CSR commitments, he said, “Between 2016–17 and 2024–25, the company spent over Rs 67 crore under corporate social responsibility initiatives including village infrastructure development, drinking water, healthcare, sports, cultural activities, sanitation, education, and skill development.”
