NIRF ranking: IIT Dhanbad 25, XLRI seventh best management institute

RANCHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad moved up two spots in ‘overall’ category and became the 25th best higher education institute in the country as per the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) report released on Monday. However, the institute’s ranking in the ‘engineering institutions’ category slipped from 13th spot in 2018

to 15th in 2019.


Ranchi-based Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra’s performance, on the other hand, nosedived from the 66th position in the ‘overall’ category in 2018 to 85th this year. Its rankings in engineering and management institute also dropped — from 26th to 30th in engineering and 61st to 44th in management — this year. But the institute has been able to improve its rankings in the category of ‘pharmacy colleges’, where it moved from 13th to 11th position.

Mesra also managed to get the tag of 10th ‘best architecture institution’ in the country in the NIRF rankings.

The institutions were ranked under five parameters, including outreach, perception, graduation outcomes, RPC (research, professional practice and collaborative performance) and TRL (teaching, learning and resources).

Jamshedpur, secured seventh rank in ‘management institutes’ category, rising three notch up from its 10th position last year. Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ranchi scored 28th in the category of ‘management institutes’ up from 40th position last year.

Shailendra Singh, director of IIM Ranchi, said, “Our goal is to be in the list of top-10 management institutions in the country in the next five years. We have jumped from the 40’s bracket to the 20’s in the rankings. That simply is a milestone in our journey towards excellence. While we have performed well in graduation outcomes, we need to improve our score in the research area,” Singh said.
