National Sports Day observed in city

Ranchi: Schools, colleges, sports clubs, and govt institutions in Ranchi organised an array of competitions, awareness drives, and cultural activities to mark the National Sports Day, which marks the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, on Friday.Sports minister Sudivya Kumar inaugurated a three-day sporting event at Morabadi's Astroturf hockey stadium in the morning. It will witness the participation of around 1,100 players from state-run sports academies, as well as 40 technical officials and support staff. Competitions will be held in athletics, hockey, football, archery, badminton, and swimming.The minister described the event as a "sports congregation of Jharkhand," adding, "The govt was committed to providing opportunities and recognition to budding talent. The state's direct recruitment scheme for players is being reconsidered to make it more effective and career-oriented." On the first day, over 300 players and coaches were felicitated, with the sports department by distributing cash awards worth more than Rs 3 crore. "Such financial support not only reduces our problems but also boosts our confidence," said an archer. Coaches too emphasised the need for consistent encouragement and better facilities for athletes. DAV Nandraj Public School, Bariatu, hosted a two-day inter-school sports carnival to celebrate the day. The event was inaugurated by agriculture minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey and PASWA national president Alok Kumar Dubey in the presence of academicians, principals, and parents. Around 600 students participated enthusiastically in athletics, football, cricket, and volleyball competitions, while parents and sports enthusiasts gathered in large numbers to witness the event. Govt schools across the state also marked the day with Prabhat Pheris, discussions on the importance of sports, and competitions in athletics, hockey, kabaddi, and traditional games. Chess, carrom, and ludo contests were also organised, culminating with prize distribution ceremonies. Bal Kalyan Sangh, a socila outfit organized a Bal Khel Pratiyogita (children's sports competition) with the objective of instilling confidence among children and raising awareness on the issue of child trafficking. Through various games and interactive activities, the initiative aimed to empower young participants with the spirit of teamwork, resilience, and self-belief.
