Jamshedpur: The Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC) on Friday started public bonfires in its command areas here to help residents beat the dipping mercury. Public bonfires will be set up across 12 locations in Mango, officials said.
“There was a delay in getting the approval for the public bonfires,” Aqib Javed, the additional municipal commissioner of MNAC, said. “Bonfires were set up in five locations today. Gradually, it will be moved up to 12 locations,” he added. MNAC said bonfires will be initially set up at Mango Chowk, Dimna Chowk, Old Purulia road, Bagansahi, Ulidih Chowk, Gandhi Maidan.
However, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has not started lighting bonfires at public places. JNAC deputy municipal commissioner Krishna Kumar did not respond to TOI’s calls when contacted. JNAC officials said lack of resources has caused the delay. “The firewood and fuel are now available with the agency, we are expecting to begin public bonfires soon,” an official said.
Jugsalai Municipal Council has been setting up bonfires at Tata Nagar railway station Chowk, Gaushala Chowk, Veer Kunwar Singh Chowk, Naya Bazar and at the railway level crossing chowk since November 27.
