Chatra: A decamped with a worth around Rs 30,000 from on Saturday night.
Footage captured by the CCTV cameras installed in the store showed a masked woman entering the shop as a customer. She stood behind another shopper and slowly picked up a ring from a display tray. Pretending to try it on, she wittingly dropped it. Moments later, she examined another jewellery piece and thereafter picked up the first ring. She then walked out of the store.
Store owner Tara Soni said the theft appeared to be the handiwork of a women’s gang exploiting the festive rush. “These women come in groups, disguise themselves as customers, and strike when the shop is crowded,” he said, urging fellow jewellers to stay alert and immediately inform police if any suspicious activity is noticed.
Officer in-charge of the Chatra Sadar police station Vipin Kumar said, “A probe has been launched. We are analysing the CCTV footage to identify the accused.”
Sources revealed that gang comprises four to five women target jewellery stores across the region.
The administration has advised all shop owners to ensure their establishments are equipped with functional CCTV cameras and to instruct their staff to stay vigilant, especially during festive seasons.
