DHANBAD: Court of special judge (women atrocities) Sriram Sharma on Tuesday awarded death sentence to Kalicharan alias Kaliya for the rape and murder of a minor girl at Rangamatti under the Baliyapur police station in 2007.
According to the prosecution, Kalicharan had kidnapped a 14-year-old girl from near a village pond, raped her and later stoned her to death .The victim's body was subsequently recovered near a bush on November 3, 2007.
According to the FIR lodged by the victim's brother Vikash Mandal, on the fateful day his sister had gone to the pond for a bath along with his neighbours Raju Mukherjee and her wife at around 9am. While raju and his wife returned home by 9.30 am, the girl failed to return home. Her body was subsequently found near a bush during a search conducted by police. The police also found her broken bangles near the pond. Some stones with blood marks were also recovered.
Kalicharan's name figured during the police investigation and he was subsequently arrested. Additional PP Dhananjay Singh said there were injury marks on the head of the victim. The prosecution presented 22 witnesses in the case. The judge found the case as rarest of rare and awarded death sentence to the accused.
