Man killed, three injured as speeding car hits villagers; Protest ensues with road blockade and police intervention
Bokaro: A man was killed and three others injured after a speeding car ran over four villagers sitting by the roadside on Saturday, triggering protests and a road blockade near Jorasimar on the Gawan-Satgawan main road of Giridih district.
According to SDPO Rajendra Prasad, the victims were sitting on the roadside when the car lost control and ploughed into them. The deceased was identified as 50-year-old Saryu Singh. The injured are Shrikant Singh, 28, Niranjan Singh, 35, and Bhim Rajvanshi, 60.
Local residents alleged that the vehicle was moving at a high speed. The impact was so severe that two victims got trapped under the car, which finally came to a halt after crashing into a banana plant several metres away.
Following the accident, angry villagers rescued the injured and detained the driver, locking him in a room. Later, he was handed over to the police. Protesters also blocked the road, demanding action.
Tensions escalated after police reached the spot, with locals pelting stones at a police vehicle. Additional forces were deployed to bring the situation under control. Police said efforts are on to restore normalcy.
