A woman passing by the market raised an alarm after she spotted smoke billowing out of a closed shop, belonging to one Subhash Gupta, at around 9.30 pm on Monday. As soon as some neighbours and shopkeepers broke open the shutter of the shop, fire spread to adjacent shops. Altogether 7 shops were gutted in the fire.

The victims were identified as Subhash's mother Urmila Devi (65), his sister Priyanka Gupta (37), and his daughter Soumiya (5).

Subhash, his brothers, Sujit and Sumit, and their father, Ashok Gupta, were away from the house, situated above the shop, when the fire broke out.
