JSR mountaineer scales Everest
Jamshedpur: In a true testament of grit, resilience and passion for the mountains, a veteran climber of the Steel city scaled Mt Everest.A senior instructor of Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF), Mohan Rawat, summited Mount Everest on May 18 at 5.20am (Nepal time). He was accompanied by Sherpa Lhakpa Sherpa.Rawat began his journey from India on April 10 and reached the Everest base camp on May 3. As part of the acclimatisation, Rawat climbed Mt Lobuche East (20,075 ft) on May 2. His summit rotation began on May 8, moving from the base camp to camp 2 via camp 1, reaching as high as camp 3 before returning to base camp on May 11.The final summit push began at 1am on May 14. After crossing the Khumbu Icefall, Rawat reached camp 2 in the morning, camp 3 on May 16, and camp 4 (South Col, 26,400 ft) on May 17. He scaled Everest in the early hours of May 18 and spent 15 mins before beginning his descent.Rawat's achievement marks yet another milestone for TSAF, which has supported and trained 13 Everest summiteers since Bachendri Pal made history with her summit in 1984."Rawat's achievement reinforces our commitment to nurturing grassroots talents and pushing the boundaries of human potential through adventure and exploration," said DB Sundara Raman, chairman TSAF and vice-president (corporate services) of Tata Steel. Rawat hails from Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand.
