Jamshedpur: With the winter chill setting in, the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and the Mango Notified Area Commitee (MNAC) have taken up steps to rescue the homeless and shift them in shelter homes to avoid the biting cold.
The two urban local bodies have constituted separate teams to make random visits to the pavements, bus terminus and auto-rickshaw parking among other public places, to identify and persuade the homeless people to shift to the shelter homes.
MNAC special officer Suresh Yadav said rescue teams have been asked to take the help of the police in aiding the homeless, if any of them are unwilling to go to the shelter homes. Yadav said two shelter homes, one each for males and females are set up in Kumrum Basti and Daigutu with adequate facilities for accommodation and food besides warm clothes.
He said the rescue teams are targeting places like Dimna Road, Old Purulia Road, Dimna Chowk, Paridih, Gandhi maidan and Subernarekha crematorium, where rag pickers and rickshaw pullers live in shanties or under the open sky.
Similarly, JNAC special officer Sanjay Kumar said after shifting the homeless to the shelter homes, they are provided with blankets and other items. “The shelter homes at Sakchi near the long-distance bus terminus and Sitaramdera have arrangements to provide a decent accommodation,” he said.
“A dedicated team of officials, including the tax inspector and the city manager, will make rounds of the command area daily and identify additional spots, if any, for the bonfire,” Kumar said.
Morover, both the civic bodies have made arrangements of bonfires at intersections, markets and other public places. More than 20 sites have been identified for the daily bonfires in the command areas across Mango and Jamshedpur.
In Jamshedpur, the JNAC rescue teams will focus on the eye hospital area, Sakchi roundabout, Sidhgora, Bistupur, Kadma, Sakchi, Golmuri, Telco (Kharangajhar) markets, Baridih Chowk, Traffic Signal Chowk in Bistupur, Parvati Crematorium and Tatanagar railway station for the rescue people, lit bonfires and distribution of blankets.
