RANCHI: JMM on Monday claimed that its star campaigner Hemant Soren remained grounded for over 90 minutes after his helicopter was not allowed to take off by the Election Commission (EC) citing security concerns for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was addressing a rally 80km away in the state.
Slamming the EC and its assurances that it will provide a level-playing field to all political parties in the fray during the state assembly election, JMM general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya claimed that the apex poll body was working to benefit only BJP and allies. He also sought President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention into the matter.
“You represent the tribal community and so does our leader. This is a distress call as we urge you to ensure the Constitutional immunity to ST candidates contesting the election,” JMM said in its address to the President.
2 IPS officers also backed BJP: JMMIn its letter, JMM said Hemant addressed a rally in Gudri in West Singhbhum district for its Manoharpur (ST) Jagat Majhi and was about to take off for another public rally in Simdega for Congress candidate Bhushan Bara.
“However, the CM’s copter was grounded for 90 minutes. This violates the EC’s protocol that no no-fly zones will be imposed for not more than 15 minutes within a 50-km radius of the PM’s location,” JMM spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said. Soren eventually reached Simdega nearly two hours late.
Modi addressed two rallies in Jharkhand on Monday — in Garhwa and in Chaibasa’s College Ground — where he attacked the JMM-led coalition govt over a host of issues.
Last week, JMM had accused the state chief electoral officer and two senior IPS officers of the state of working at the behest of the BJP-led NDA govt at the Centre to tilt the electoral scales in NDA’s favour.
