Jamshedpur Mango Flyover Delay: Traffic Chaos & Extended Deadlines
Jamshedpur: Traffic congestions on Mango Bridge and other roads near the Mango Main Road area have been a regular affair ever since the construction of a new flyover began in September 2024. Motorists have to spend 45 minutes to cover a kilometre on the Mango Main Road. Now, as the construction of the Mango flyover gets delayed, problems are only compounding for motorists and locals of the area.
Distances, which once took 10 minutes to cover, are now taking more than 45 minutes ever since the construction began. Often, ambulances ferrying critical patients are stuck in the traffic snarls, hooting sirens asking for pathways to move ahead.
Amzad Khan, a college-goer, said, “A major chunk of the road is now blocked for construction work and to make matters worse, vegetable vendors are encroaching upon a big section too. Hence, the traffic moves at a snail's pace from morning till night.”
The 3.4 km-long flyover is being built at Rs 252 crore. Once complete, it will connect Sakchi with Mango. Originally slated for completion on Mar 31 this year, the project is likely to get delayed as only 60% of the work has been completed till date.
Dipak Sahay, the superintendent engineer of the road construction department, said the new deadline for completion of flyover work is June 10, 2027. “Major work on the Mango side of the flyover has been completed while girder installation work of the four-lane flyover over Subarnarekha river is halfway complete.” The flyover will have 57 pillars.
While he remained hopeful that the flyover will open for motorists by June next year, Sahay said, “If the construction company fails to meet the June deadline, it will be fined.”
