ISL: Jamshedpur FC go top with win over FC Goa
The Indian Super League (ISL) clash between Jamshedpur FC and FC Goa witnessed two storms over ninety minutes on Friday.
The first was a hailstorm accompanied by heavy rain early on, which forced a stoppage of around 20 minutes after just five minutes of play in Jamshedpur. The second came in the final quarter-hour of the match, one that the visitors failed to weather as the hosts surged to a 2-0 victory at JRD Tata Sports Complex, snapping a five-game winless run with consecutive wins.
Rei Tachikawa (82') and Madih Talal (90+5') struck late to end Goa’s three-match winning streak and derail their push to move to the top of the table.
Instead, the win propelled the Red Miners to the summit with 21 points from 11 matches. Goa dropped to third with 19 points from 11 games, while Mohun Bagan Super Giant, second on 20 points from nine matches, still have two games in hand.
The match began amid heavy rain and was halted as conditions worsened. Once play resumed, Jamshedpur showed early intent and gradually grew into the contest, a dominance that eventually paid dividends late in the night. Despite enjoying more possession in the first half, the hosts were unable to convert their superiority into goals before the break.
Talal was outstanding throughout, his creativity in the attacking third keeping the home crowd engaged. The attacking midfielder assisted the opening goal before capping his performance with a stunning strike of his own.
After heading into the interval goalless, Jamshedpur returned with greater urgency and put sustained pressure on the Sandesh Jhingan-led Goa defence early in the second half. Goa, however, defended resolutely for much of the contest before finally cracking in the closing stages.
The deadlock was broken in the 82nd minute when Tachikawa headed home from Talal’s corner on the right, getting free of his marker. Although it appeared that Mohammed Sanan may have applied a faint back flick before the ball crossed the line, the goal was credited to Tachikawa.
Goa searched for an equaliser in the closing minutes, but their hopes were extinguished in stoppage time. Talal sealed the result in style, lobbing the ball over Hrithik Tiwari from well over 35 yards after spotting the goalkeeper off his line.
