The dean (media and branding) of the institute, Rajni Singh, said the HVICs are geographical areas where hydrogen applications are combined into an integrated hydrogen ecosystem for promoting large-scale use of hydrogen.

The HVIC at Nirsa campus of the institute is strategically located as it is close to several industries of Jharkhand and West Bengal and has an enormous potential of kick-starting the hydrogen economy in this region at an appropriate scale and thereby, eventually lead to energy transition, she added.

With a time-tested legacy in research and development activities pertaining to conventional energy resources, IIT (ISM)-Dhanbad has a natural motivation to look for solution to global warming, said Prof Sandipan Kumar Das of the department of mechanical engineering heading the project, adding that the significance of setting up the HVIC increased manifold as Jharkhand has potential to generate hydrogen from biomass besides water by electro-catalytic and photo-catalytic ways.

Delegates from industries, academic professionals and researchers from different organisations delved deep into different aspects of hydrogen generation and challenges thereof at stakeholders meet organised on the institute campus last week, the dean informed.
