Ranchi: Congress MLA from Mahagama, Deepika Pandey Singh, has sought chief minister Hemant Soren’s intervention to help about 1.6 crore people of Jharkhand who, over the years, had invested in various schemes of Sahara India but are struggling to get their money back despite the Supreme Court’s directives.
Singh on Monday said she had also written a formal letter to Soren on January 14 to pursue with the Central Registrar in New Delhi to help depositors get their money back. She said she has learnt that the company owes about Rs 50,000 crore to scores of beneficiaries in the state.
She said, “Recently, a delegation of All India Jan Andolan Sangharsh Morcha had met me with its concerns and issues regarding Sahara India. The members of the Morcha told me that about 13 crore depositors, mainly the poor and middle class people, had invested in several financial schemes run by the said company over the years despite the orders from Supreme Court as well as different high courts in the past. From Jharkhand alone, the documents given by them revealed that about 1.6 crore people have lost their money which is in tune of about a whopping Rs 50,000 crore.”
She added that following successive courts’ rulings in regard to Sahara India scam, the Central Registrar in Delhi had on September 24, 2020, frozen financial activities of Sahara India Cooperative Society directing it to stop taking any deposit or deposit renewal from existing or new depositors. “However, the company is still said to be illegally taking money from several depositors, mostly poor people rather than returning its dues back to the small-time individual investors. Both the central and state governments must intervene now,” she said, adding that she will soon meet Soren to pursue the case.
Soren is currently in Kerala with his family for a vacation.
He also had a courtesy meeting with Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday morning. In a tweet, he informed that the two discussed tourism development opportunities in Jharkhand.
