Toxic smoke from JSR dump yard poses health concern
Jamshedpur: Over 10,000 residents in Jamshedpur's Domuhani area are facing severe health risks from hazardous smoke from the municipal waste yard, rekindling memories of a similar crisis two years ago that led to National Green Tribunal's (NGT) intervention.Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy said that the yard, which serves both Mango and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committees (MNAC and JNAC), is filled with various types of waste, including medical, chemical, and e-waste."The current situation poses a serious health threat to locals, stemming from continuous negligence and complicity between the district administration and pollution control board," Roy added. Two years ago, when a similar condition prevailed, residents approached the NGT after failed attempts to engage the district administration. Following NGT's intervention, the administration and pollution board submitted an action plan, but implementation remains pending.Roy warned of filing a contempt case against both the authorities, if immediate action isn't taken. "The situation has only worsened in the past two years despite assurances to the NGT," he added.Local resident Mukul Mishra said that approximately 10,000 people from six bastis and 16 residential societies are exposed to hazardous gases. The affected area encompasses multiple residential communities in Domuhani, making it a significant public health concern.Attempts to reach JNAC deputy town commissioner Krishna Kumar for a comment were unsuccessful despite repeated calls.
