“The blast which occurred around 7 am set an alarm bell ringing in the plant. For the first few moments, workers and officials were not able to ascertain what happened,” said an officer.
The impact of the explosion was so heavy that it shook the buildings on the plant premises and was also heard by residents a few kilometres away from the spot. “I heard the sound at the City Center. Initially, I stopped for a while but later moved after I realised that some thing may have happened inside the plant,” said Vijay Chandra, a medical representative.
According to BSL chief of communication Sanjay Tiwary, the victim has been admitted to the hospital and is now out of danger.
“It was a minor incident that took place during the process of dumping of slag in an open pit of SMS-II. An inquiry is being done to ascertain the cause,” he said. Tiwary said that incident had possibly occurred due to a water seepage in the open pit.
