RANCHI: Noted educationist and tribal rights advocate Karma Oraon died at a private hospital in Ranchi on Sunday. He was 72. Karma had not been keeping well for some time now, sources close to him said.
Chief minister Hemant Soren said Oraon’s death was a personal loss to him. “I used to get guidance from him on several issues. It is a personal loss to me. May the Almighty help the departed soul rest in peace,” Soren tweeted.
A former head of the department of anthropology at Ranchi University, Oraon also served as a member of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) during the times of unified Bihar. He was actively involved in building consensus and creating awareness for obtaining a separate religious code for the practitioners of Sarna faith.
BJP leader Babulal Marandi also condoled the death of Oraon. “He dedicated his life for the betterment of tribal communities and their language and culture. His work will always inspire people,” Marandi said.
Former CM Raghubar Das tweeted his tributes to Oraon and lauded him for tireless efforts to preserve and enrich Jharkhand’s culture and tradition. BJP state president Deepak Prakash also offered his tributes to Oraon on social media.
Congress leader and Singhbhum MP Geeta Kora visited Oraon’s home to pay her respects.
