Koderma: Due to incessant downpours and forecasts of heavy rainfall in the coming days, the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) late on Monday evening opened the gates of Tilaiya Dam as a precautionary measure.Around 8 pm, four out of the dam’s 14 upper-section gates were released. Prior to this, public announcements were made in Tilaiya and adjoining areas, urging residents to remain cautious.S M Qadri, in-charge of the Tilaiya Dam Hydel Project, informed that the danger mark of the dam is 1,218 feet, while the current water level stands at 1,214.79 feet. “Though the danger level has not yet been breached, precautionary measures have been undertaken in anticipation of heavy inflows,” he said on Tuesday.Qadri further stated that flood warnings have been issued as 1,100 cusecs of water are being discharged. “As per guidelines, flood warnings are issued when releases exceed 1,000 cusecs. Normally, 630 cusecs are discharged when both hydel units are in operation,” he said.Authorities have cautioned that the discharge will raise the Barakar river’s level, urging people living along its banks to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near the river.
The district administration has deployed nodal officers and police personnel to maintain a strict vigil in potentially affected areas, including Kanti, Murtiyon, Tamay, and Biharo under Chandwara and Jainagar blocks. Officials assured that the situation is being closely monitored and further action will be taken as per instructions from the Maithon headquarters.
