RANCHI: CPI (Maoist) and its splinter group members, who have till now denounced several government schemes, are helping Unique Identification Authority of India (
UIDAI) officials in preparing Aadhaar cards for villagers and their family members in Red zones.
The Maoists have come forward in Naxalite-affected Karra and Murhu blocks of Khunti district, which the UIDAI officials visited recently to prepare the cards, and provided them with generator facility to work for late hours and complete their pending work.
These areas have the presence of both the Maoists and the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI).
As the dusk sets in, around six officials of the UIDAI, who had set up a camp in Karra block last week, were trying to wrap up their work and wanted to return to Khunti fearing darkness and untoward incidents.
Just little before the dusk, the Maoists and their sympathizers came and asked the officials whether they could spend the night in the village and prepare the cards. They said they would provide the officials with food and generator facility to run the computers. Having provided with food and shelter, the UIDAI officials worked for long hours and registered the villagers and the family members of the Maoists for the Aadhaar cards.
"The Maoists and other rebels wanted their family members to have Aadhaar cards and it is a positive sign that they are coming forward to support the government scheme," said Khunti deputy commissioner Rakesh Kumar. He said in the Naxalite-affected Murhu and Karra blocks, more than 80% registration had been done so far and many had even got their Aadhaar cards. "It's a very encouraging figure," Kumar added.
The Aadhaar card will soon be made in other extremist-hit blocks of Khunti district, which include Rania, Torpa and Arki. "During the Census, the family of Maoist commander Kundan Pahan at Barigadha village in Arki block came forward most eagerly than others and recorded their presence," said the Khunti DC. He added that the rebels had always helped the Census officials for the benefit of their family members and other villagers later. "We have not faced any problem, although we had apprehensions of some problems."
