Ranchi: In a first for Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), a 27-year-old woman, Anita Kumari, from Itkhori block of Jharkhand’s Chatra successfully gave birth to five female babies on Monday.
Officials at the state-owned hospital said this was arguably the first time in the history of Rims which in the past had witnessed delivery of quadruples. Monday’s delivery was done by Dr Sashi Bala Singh, the hospital informed.
“The mother is doing fine but the babies are underweight between 750g and 1.1kg. So, they are kept in NICU and will continue to be under medical observation till they stabilise properly,” said an official at Rims. On the chances of their survival and future growth of such babies, president of Ranchi Obstetric Gynaecological Society, Dr Suman Sinha said medical studies so far haven’t reported anything negative.
