Chatra Air Ambulance Crash: Villagers Lead Rescue After Chartered Plane Falls in Dense Forest
Chatra: Moments after a deafening roar tore through the evening calm of Kasari-Karmatand village in Simaria block of Chatra on Monday, masons and labourers working in a nearby building launched a search operation after seeing the aircraft flying low and out of balance. With the sound of its fall heard within a radius of 7 km, the villagers launched a search operation and found the wreckage of the aircraft in two hours.
Hundreds of mobile phone torchlights first lit up the dense forest where a chartered air ambulance crashed. Before official rescue teams could fully mobilise, nearly 300 villagers from 15 surrounding hamlets ran towards the thickly wooded site, guided only by the sound of the impact and the glow of their phone flashlights. Their swift response turned the dark forest into a flickering corridor of light as they began searching through debris scattered across nearly 1 km.
Many said they saw the aircraft flying low and out of balance. It was raining accompanied by thunderstorm. They saw the aircraft falling, which made them begin the rescue operation, which lasted around two to 2.5 hours.
A local youth Sunil Bhuiyan said the aircraft made a racing car-like sound as it went down. He claimed that the sound was audible up to 15 km away. “The noise was so loud that it broke the silence of the jungle. Everyone rushed out of their homes to see what happened.”
Manoj Yadav, who was among the first to reach the spot, said, “The sight of the aircraft engine left me stunned. When I saw the engine, I realised this was a major accident. We knew we had to act fast and try to bring everyone out.”
“Every step had to be taken carefully. In some places the ground was slippery. But fear had no meaning at that moment. Humanity pushed us forward,” he said, confirming that they all had to walk more than 3 km to reach the spot.
