Bokaro Steel Limited Upgrades Burn Unit to State-of-the-Art Facility in 2026
Bokaro: Central PSU Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL) is planning to transform the existing burn unit at its Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) into a state-of-the-art facility in 2026. Once operational, the unit is expected to provide a lifeline to burn patients from Bokaro, adjoining areas of the state and neighbouring West Bengal.
As part of the initiative, a four-member team comprising doctors and civil engineers from Bokaro and Rourkela has been deputed to visit premier burn care centres, including AIIMS-New Delhi for a feasibility study. Led by Dr. Aninda Mandal, the head of burn and plastic surgery unit at BGH, the team is studying advanced infrastructure, equipment, management systems and other protocols to get it implemented in BGH.
Team members include Ayushman Samanta from Bokaro’s civil department, Plastic Surgeon Dr Ruby Singh from the hospital of Rourkela Steel Plant and engineer Pradipto Mandal. The team is also scheduled to visit the National Burns Centre in Mumbai in January and will submit a detailed report to the management thereafter. BSL is also working on a plan to sign a MoU with AIIMS New Delhi to enable telemedicine support for BGH doctors.
Currently, the 12-bed burn unit at BGH is constrained by many hi-tech facilities, making it difficult to handle severe burn cases. The proposed upgrade aims to add modern ICUs, modular operation theatres, a skin bank and trained manpower, reducing dependence on private hospitals. “The process to modernise the BGH burn unit is underway. Expert visits are being conducted, and the facility will be upgraded soon for the benefit of Bokaro and beyond,” said Manikant Dhan, chief of communications at BSL.
