RANCHI: Ahead of the coming budget session in Parliament, the
BJP asked the UPA government at the Centre to take steps to create an environment for the smooth conduct of business and said it was yet to take a final decision on whether or not it would disrupt proceedings in the House.
Iterating its demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the multi-million 2G spectrum scam, leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said his party was not in favour of disrupting parliamentary proceedings for no reasons.
"However the Opposition is left with this tool only in democracy when the majority (government) turns deaf ear to the demand," he said. Jaitley said it was because of non-compromising attitude of the Opposition that telecom minister A Raja was removed from the cabinet. He, however, admitted that the BJP was yet to take a final decision in the matter of disrupting budget session.
Jaitley was here on Friday to attend a two-day BJP state executive committee meeting. Addressing the media, he criticised the role of the Prime Minister in handling important issues of national interest. "Manmohan Singh has failed to check corruption, price rise and his own allies causing loss of face to the Union government," he said.
Accusing the Congress of patronising corruption and corrupt people, Jaitley said the appointment of P J Thomas as the chief vigilance commissioner was a case in point. "The post is constitutionally important which is authorised to appoint even the director of the chief investigating agency-CBI and when the then leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj raised the issue of corruption charges during the vital meeting convened by the government, the charges should have been considered," he said adding that now the Congress was failing to convince the court and the common people for its decisions.
Asked about issues of corruption concerning the BJP in Karnataka, Jaitley agreed to go deep into the matter at party level. He described the allegations against state chief minister B S Yeddyurappa as politically motivated. "No institution or judicial body has pointed fingers at the chief minister. Instead, it is the governor of the state who sanctioned prosecution which is apparently politically motivated. Still the BJP is ready to look into the matter and act accordingly," he said.
Reposing faith on the Munda government in Jharkhand, Jaitely complimented the chief minister by saying "Well begun is half done". He asked the allies to join hands with Munda in taking the state to the path of development by ensuring stability. "The only thing concerning Jharkhand has been political instability and this time we are pinning hope on the able leadership of Munda," he said.
